Why We Created the Left Arm Support:
I initially started with the right radial artery as an alternative access to the femoral artery. I often found that with older people, patients of short stature, or those with a left internal mammary artery graft, Right Radial Access wasn't as effective.
So I began to use the left radial approach on these patients. While the outcome was very positive, there were difficulties.
Working from the left side was awkward for a right handed interventionalist
Room set up was more complicated and took longer
I tried a variety of methods, including pillows, to support the arm across the abdomen but found the wrist kept sliding down to the left side of the patient forcing me to reach across the abdomen.
That's why Kevin Liu and I had to come up with a better solution. After several trial versions, we came up with the idea of a hard support combined with a foam insert. This combination holds the arm up comfortably, in a quick and easy set up. As it turned out, it’s economical and easy to clean as well. After speaking with people around the country, we found most preferred a board for access as well - prompting the design of a side board which can attach in horizontal position and vertical position. This new design has spurred interest around the country as interventional operators are moving towards using the left wrist for access.
We are now teamed up with Radux Devices to provide a complete support systems with their StandTall sheath extension and radiation shield combined with our arm support systems. Our right support system is on the way.
